“European values are under attack. From without, since the US as Europe’s closest ally has pivoted to Asia, while at the same time it suffers from deep socio-political divides not the least exacerbated by the Trump administration’s legacy. This vacuum in the international system has created a deep uncertainty on both sides of the Atlantic and catalyzed the need for Europe to strengthen its agency as a political actor with confidence. On top of that, targeted disinformation by illiberal or non-democratic states and non-state actors plagues our public debates, causing discontent and aggravating anti-European sentiments. However, Europe is also threatened from within. Anti-European ideas have successfully spread amongst member states and its populace, thus putting a strain on the very fabric of a free and liberal continent. For Europe to retain its capacity as a project of peace and prosperity, it is essential for young professionals like myself – who have benefited greatly from European institutions and ideals – to stand up for its values. Organizations such as United Europe play a crucial part in this battle by offering a forum for public debate, raising awareness to the issues at hand, and bringing together committed stakeholders – and I’d like to bring to the table my own (albeit rather humble) heft.”
