We want to discuss possible scenarios and changes for the Brussels agenda 2021/2022 and talk about Germany’s role in the Union, our geopolitical status after Merkel, and talk about the risks we face in safeguarding the rule of law, current security challenges, climate policy developments, and the German-EU relation with Russia, China, and the US.

The “Members’ Talk” will be opened by Mr Günther H. Oettinger who will talk about the current state of play, followed by an open discussion with feedback from you, the members of United Europe.

Joe Biden’s arrival at the White House is in the European Union associated with many hopes for a reset of transatlantic relations. As far as foreign policy is concerned the expectations are justified as Biden is striving to regain lost faith and also intends to intensify the cooperation with Europe again. Biden also stands for the hope of a return to multilateralism and a rules-based international order. But as to trade and climate protection there may only be a change of tonality rather than facts.

For EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, limiting global warming is one of the top issues of her term of office. The Green Deal should help Europe become the first climate-neutral continent in 2050. To achieve this, existing climate targets must be tightened. These initiatives are to be welcomed, but the EU institutions have so far not sufficiently assessed the impact on industry, since the steel and chemicals sectors are particularly affected. Energy-intensive industries in particular are now at a crossroads. They need a massive aid package if they are to have a future in Europe.
